LLoyd & Esther Severance

Lloyd and Esther were blessed with 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd sang bass in a church quartet. He started singing in the 1930's and even took voice lessons. Lloyd's heart was to provide quality gospel music that anyone could attend and enjoy without charge.

Chic was part of the original community men's group called "The Layman's Club" in Cass City, Michigan. They began the New Year's Eve Gospel Sing that is still going today. This year this event celebrated it's 41st. year. The Calvarymen have participated in every one of these years. The Layman's Club has also brought such groups as the Cathedrals, Bob Wills and the Inspirations, Toney Brothers and the Talleys to the greater Thumb area for gospel concerts. The Talleys will be in concert on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Cass City Park at 7 PM., Cass City, Michigan.

In 1997, Chic and son Art (Gospel Committee Chairman) visited with Lew Tibbits about bringing a gospel sing to Bay Shore Camp and having it be a benefit concert with all proceeds going to the camp. A committee was formed - Cliff Jacoby, Lloyd (Chic) Severance, Bob Bader, Les Severance, Art Severance, Donna Rhodes, Dan Grimshaw, Barbie Brooks and Lew Tibbits. The first concert was held in August 1998 with Donny Cox from WSLN radio in Flint as the MC. Less than 10 RV's were here. Attendance was approximately 500 people for the one day concert on Saturday. Ten years later in 2007, 18 groups were here and Donny & Judy Cox continue to MC. We parked 153 paid RV guests. Camp housing was filled to capacity and approximately 2,500 people enjoyed the 4 day event. Good food, great fellowship and wonderful gospel music fills the air. Surely a touch of heaven here at Bay Shore Camp. After Lloyd's passing in 2000, the Convention officials renamed the event to honor Severance's many contributions to gospel singing in the Thumb and greater Michigan.
